Functional Benefits of Traditional Braces

There are many types of braces, and they all have their advantages and disadvantages. Traditional braces, however, are still the most popular. If you are considering orthodontic correction, then it is a good idea to know about your options.

Types of Braces

Metal braces, or traditional braces, are the oldest type, and they are the ones most people are familiar with. The current models are smaller and less noticeable than the “metal mouth” many adults remember. The arch wires are also now heat-activated so that they can move the teeth more quickly and with less discomfort than in the old days.

Ceramic or porcelain braces look just like the metal braces, but their brackets are either transparent or the same color as the patient’s teeth. Lingual braces are metal braces that are attached to the backs of the patient’s teeth. They are therefore much less visible than standard metal braces. Damon braces are metal braces that have a special sliding mechanism that holds the arch wire and allows teeth to move more freely into their correct positions.

Disadvantages of Invisalign®

The traditional braces, as old school as they are, still have some advantages over the competition. For example, they can be applied to patients of any age, while Invisalign® can only be used for adults or teenagers; it is not made for children.

In addition, Invisalign® is both removable and virtually invisible – which makes it easy for the patient to lose the aligners. Replacing a lost aligner is expensive, and the aligners have to be replaced every two weeks in any case. Invisalign® is, therefore, one of the more expensive options. Finally, it does not work on more severe orthodontic problems.

Disadvantages of Lingual Braces

Like Invisalign®, lingual braces are expensive and don’t help the more severe dental problems. They are also difficult to install and clean. Adjustments take longer than with traditional braces.

Advantages of Traditional Braces

Unlike Invisalign® or lingual braces, traditional braces can help a patient with severe or complex dental problems, and they can do so relatively quickly. They can straighten teeth and close gaps more quickly than Invisalign® can. The traditional metal braces are also the least expensive type.
